Have a few questions or need some information? How can you make sure that you’ve got the dumpster that is the right size and style for what you need?

Knowing and understanding the difference between dumpster sizes is an excellent first step when you’re looking to rent a dumpster. We’re going to help you learn as much as possible about dumpster sizes and which one may be right for your project. We also have more information in our  dumpster rental guide

Most Popular Dumpster Sizes

The most popular sizes of dumpster are as follows:

· 10-yard dumpsters, which hold 10 cubic yards of debris, are usually 12 ft. in length x 8 ft. in width x 3 ft. in height.

· 15-yard dumpsters which hold 15 cubic yards of debris are generally 12 ft. in length x 8 ft. x 4.5 ft in height.

· 20-yard dumpsters, which hold 20 cubic yards, are typically 17 ft. in length by 8 ft. in width x 5 ft. in height.

· 30-yard dumpsters, which hold 30 cubic yards, are typically 22 ft. in length by 8 ft. in width x 6 ft. in height.

What is a Cubic Yard?

When you look at these sizes, you’ll find that they all talk about the “cubic yard,” which is a typical form of measurement when you’re looking at volume. But, do you know how to picture a cubic yard in your head?

In short, a cubic yard is a box that can hold 3 feet, by 3 feet, by 3 feet worth of stuff – or one cubic yard. Most dishwashers are about this size, so if you can picture your dishwasher sitting in a 10 cubic yard container, it’s going to take up about 10% of the space – you could theoretically fit 10 dishwashers in a 10 cubic yard dumpster.

How do you figure out cubic yardage? It’s quite simple. If you know the dimensions of the dumpster (length, width, and height), you can multiply all three of those numbers together to get the number of cubic feet. Divide the total of cubic feet by 27, and you’ve got your cubic yards.

What  You Should Watch Out for When Choosing a Dumpster

You want to choose the correct size of dumpster for your particular job – and you always want to be sure that you overestimate instead of trying to cram as much as possible into a dumpster. If you think that you’re going to make 22 or 23 cubic yards of debris from a job, you want to go ahead and get the 30 cubic yard dumpster. Why?

We require that any debris that goes into the dumpster must be able to stay in the dumpster. If there are items that would be above the top that makes it impossible for us to move the dumpster without losing debris (safety hazard).

So, let’s say you have 22 cubic yards of debris. A 20 cubic yard dumpster rental from us should be approximately $380. A 30 cubic yard dumpster rental is $425, and a 10 cubic yard dumpster is $300. If you go ahead and rent the 30 cubic yard dumpster, it would just be $425. But, if you tried to fit it in the 20 cubic yard dumpster and it didn’t work, then you may want us to haul the 20-yard dumpster and bring back a 10. Now, you’ve paid $680 when you could have spent $425.

Check dimensions if you’re putting the dumpster in a small space.

Louisville is a large city full of crowded suburbs, you want to be sure that you’re going to be able to fit the dumpster in the space it needs to be in, always double-check the dimensions.

Our dumpsters have a 8-foot long door that you can use to bring debris in through the back of the dumpster. If you’d like to use that, be sure that you have that additional 8 feet + behind the dumpster to allow the door to swing open.

Overhead space can be tight as well.  You want to make sure you avoid areas with low hanging power lines, trees, etc.

What Can I Put In Different Sized Dumpsters?

So, now that we understand a little more about roll-off dumpsters and their sizing, it’s time to make some considerations as to what size you may want to rent. We’ll explore some of your options and help you to find exactly what it is that makes sense for your particular job.

While the following lists are not exact examples of what you may be able to put in a dumpster of a particular size, we did want to provide you with some examples of what you may be able to use them for. This is meant to help you decide between different sizes of dumpsters when it comes time for you to rent one for your project. There are some things to know concerning what can and cannot be placed in the dumpsters.

10 Yard Dumpsters

If you’re taking care of a small remodel or cleaning project at your home, a 10-yard dumpster is just the right size to take care of everything. Here are some of the most common projects that we’ve seen use a 10-yard dumpster effectively.

Small bathroom or small kitchen renovations.

  • Removing decks that are 250 square feet or smaller.
  • Roof shingles for a roof of 1,500 square feet or smaller.
  • Cleaning basement or garbage debris.

15 Yard Dumpsters

Our 15 yards are a fantastic value. It has the same footprint as the 10 yard container and is just a little taller. This allows it to fit in the same tight places! They make it very simple for you to take care of anything and everything that may come along. 15-yard dumpsters are the standard for residential cleanup and debris work, but can be used in commercial contexts as well especially where space is limited. The most common uses for 15-yard dumpsters may include:

  • Replacing windows, siding, and/or roofing.
  • Roof replacement jobs.
  • Garage or room clean-outs
  • New constructions or additions.
  • Industrial uses (mass amounts of trash, debris, paper, etc.).

20 Yard Dumpsters

20-yard dumpsters are one of the best deals (See what we did there?)  that you can find – they have good pricing, and they fit a lot of stuff in them without taking up too much space in the process. Their compact footprint makes it easy to fit anywhere, and you rarely need more than 20 cubic yards of debris to be hauled away at a time. Some of the most common 20-yard projects are as follows:

  • Removing debris from large basements, attics, and/or garages.
  • Flooring removal (including carpets) for a large home.
  • Removing or remodeling debris from medium to large decks.
  • One layer of roof shingles for a 2,500+ square foot roof or roughly 76 squares.

30 Yard Dumpsters

Commercial and residential clean-out jobs need a lot more space, especially if you’re going to be getting rid of things like furniture as a part of the process. So, having 30 cubic yards of space available so that you can get all of the debris out of there can go a very long way. Here are some of the most common uses for 30-yard options.

  • If you’re putting a complete addition onto your home.
  • Any sort of new home construction may have enough debris for a 30-yard container.
  • Demolishing a garage.
  • Replacing all of the windows or all of the siding on a current home.
  • Commercial roofing jobs
  • Large yard-waste projects
  • Entire home or apartment building demolition work.
  • Building clean-outs for an office building, apartment complex, or other building.
  • New constructions or additions.
